Situational awareness during the holidays

Particularly with the holidays it is imperative to maintain situational awareness within the community. It's especially important around big shopping days during the holidays. That's when thieves are looking for easy targets. In the media there have been reports of perpetrators canvassing shopping center parking lots attempting break ins, vehicle/gift thefts, purse snatching and accosting shoppers.
Case in point a CG member's wife was recently targeted at a local Wal-Mart (Behrman Highway location). Two individuals approached her vehicle, one attempting to divert her attention on the passenger side, while the other approached from the driver's side. Due to her keen sense of awareness she was able to recognize the situation, quickly get in the car and speed away. Please discuss this type of situational awareness with family members to avoid being a victim.
Here are a few tips for consideration.
Hide your shopping bags. Many cars have shopping bags in plain site full of new presents. Put them in the trunk where they're hidden or take something and throw it over the bags. Police remind you that while you're shopping thieves are too.
Know where you parked your car. It's critical for parking lot safety.
Sometimes we take things for granted in our daily lives and forget to think about safety.
Limit cell phone use in the parking lot. Often people in the parking lot talk on their phone or text greatly diminishing situational awareness. When thieves see an easy target, that's when they make a move and exploit that target.
Criminals are going to stay away from people that look like they are walking with a purpose, travel in groups when possible.
So, what should you do if you are jumped?
Police say don't scream because you never know what the perpetrator may do.
Cooperate with your attacker. If it's a purse they want, if it's your bags, give up those monetary issues, they are things that you can replace.
Other tips from police: Always park in a well lit area, carry your bags/purse away from traffic to avoid drive-by purse snatchers and have your keys in your hand and be ready to go.
Don't let those door-buster deals turn into freebies for a thief or worse have someone harmed.
Have a safe holiday season.
